In a lot of areas in Yap, the volcanic red soil is infertile, acidic, and not conducive to plant and crop growth. To remedy this, biochar is used to condition the soil and make volcanic red soils more fertile and able to produce crops.
Promoting small farms is an effective way to ensure local communities can grow enough food in a sustainable fashion. Additionally, urban areas utilize urban agriculture and employ innovative techniques to grow food, such as growing seedlings in polybags, using pallets to make vertical gardens, and making pots out of plastic bottles. |
